Cooking Green Fertilizer, or How to Love Weeds
The end of spring and the beginning of summer have one important feature for gardeners - plants in this period intensively grow and grow the ovary, the future harvest, while they consume a huge amount of water and nutrients. Therefore - what do they need? That's right, they need help! Especially in regions with poor and sandy soils, in which there are few nutrients, and water leaves like sand through your fingers. Plants need regular watering and top dressing during this period, otherwise you cannot grow a good crop. We will talk about the green fertilizer for plants, which literally "rolls" under your feet (take it - I don’t want it), in this article.
About how to properly water the garden and the garden, read article 10 of the main mistakes when watering the garden.
How to feed plants in early summer
To understand the big picture: there are basic terms for fertilizing, usually in autumn or early spring, which allow plants to start well in the new season. And there are top dressings (light “snacks”), which allow evenly supplying the growing plant organism with everything necessary until the middle of summer.
Why until mid-summer, you ask. Because all top dressings, one way or another, contain a large amount of nitrogen, necessary for growth. But the prolonged growth is fraught with poor preparation for the winter and freezing of young shoots of the plant. Therefore, all top dressing is used only until mid-summer and no later.
Of course, you should understand that this rule works for perennial crops that winter in the open ground, and for annuals (flowers and vegetables) that live only until the cold weather can be helped all season.
The fastest option is to do liquid top dressing, then all useful substances easily get to the roots and are quickly absorbed by them. The effect is noticeable after a few days.
You can go to the garden store to buy Nitroammofosku, or rather a more modern fertilizer with trace elements, dilute it in water and water the beds and trunks. Chemistry? Yes, but not about that now.
You can use water infusion of chicken manure or manure, if you are a champion of "proper" farming. Do you have a livestock farm? Then this path is yours. For most gardeners and summer residents, these options are unacceptable, given the costs of the purchase, transportation and manual labor to refine a pile of purchased manure.
But there is one material, of which there is a lot in any area and which is quite well suited for the manufacture of effective organic fertilizer - the so-called grass walker. I don’t know about you, but I like this name, it’s somehow optimistic.
The basis of the grass walker are weeds, which many fight on their sites, and, as a rule, unsuccessfully. Starting to make and use a grass walker, you will find that you are sorely lacking in weeds and you need to turn to neighbors for “help”.
True, not all weeds will fit. Say, the sense of a shepherd’s bag with its skinny and stiff stems will be small, it’s better to take something fleshy, juicy. Nettle is considered to be the best option.
I will not try to compare the usefulness of the leaves of a particular herb, this is a matter for specialists. My opinion is this: weed greens are accumulated useful substances taken from the earth, and there are many of them in any weed grass. Our task: to return these substances to the earth - to the roots of cultivated plants.
How to make a weed herbal walker
But let's move on to the recipe itself. So, we picked up a mountain of weeds (or mowed). It is advisable to grind them a bit, so the process will be faster, but if you are not a fussy gardener, then you can not grind. Add all this mass into a large spacious tank. The most popular option among summer residents is an enamel bath that has served its purpose, although fuel barrels also compete with it.
But do not try to fill the tank completely, leave space to the edges, about 1/3. Now fill with water so that it completely covers the "greens". Stir and cover. It is not necessary to seal tightly, the mass will gradually begin to ferment and release gas, and it needs to have an outlet. So a piece of plastic film pressed along the edges of the planks will fit perfectly.
How much to wait? Depends on the ambient temperature, but about 2 weeks. What you should pay attention to? During fermentation, foam rises, and if you do not leave a gap from the top edge, valuable liquid can “run away”.
It is better to place a container with a grass walker in the shade so that the hot summer sun does not overheat it, there, as in any braga, there is its own optimum temperature and, most importantly, its uniformity. You can add Em preparations, a shovel of manure to accelerate the process, someone adds baker's yeast, and someone adds beer.
This, in my opinion, is too much, do we need free fertilizer? A little land with soil microorganisms, and this is all present on the roots of ruthlessly torn weeds, works quite well for themselves. You can sometimes stir the stirrer with a shovel.
When after about two weeks, the foam settles, your free and, most importantly, organic fertilizer is ready. But do not use this concentrate directly, it is diluted with water, approximately 1: 2 - 1: 4. The semi-decomposed mass from the tank can be thrown into a compost pile or used as mulch. But, do not take out everything. Leave a little on the bottom, this will serve as an excellent sourdough for subsequent batches of herbal walker (as in the manufacture of homemade yogurt). Did you like it? Will you do more?
There is an opinion that there is a shortage of phosphorus in the walker and it is advised to add ash or superphosphate to it in addition. Around chemical reactions with such mixing are protracted disputes.
In my opinion, you need an optimal (correct) combination of organic and mineral fertilizers, this will help to avoid distortions in nutrition. After all, we do not have our own laboratories in the area where we could accurately determine the presence of a substance in a fertilizer mixture. So, I repeat, I combine. Fertilized with a broiler, in a week I sprinkle ash. I think so you will not be mistaken.
Standards for applying green fertilizer for different crops
How to use and what are the norms for introducing a herbal walker
• For young seedlings of trees and adult bushes of berry crops approximately: 5-10 liters of working solution per plant.
• For vegetables and garden strawberries: 10 liters per 1 sq. M beds.
• On an adult fruit tree: from 50 to 100 l of top dressing.
Here, as you can see, there are no hard application rates, fertilizer is of soft action. But with regular use it gives excellent results. And what is regular use? The solution was fermented and ready, I used it, immediately loaded a new portion, wait 2 weeks and fertilize again. So, once every two weeks it turns out.
As with any fertilizing, the plants should be watered abundantly the day before.
You can also use herbal brodilka for foliar top dressing on leaves. But, since this fertilizer is home-made, then you definitely will not advise the proportion. I can say that, like all foliar top dressing, grassy walker should be diluted strongly with water and try on a small area of the crown before use. Thus, the desired concentration of the solution should be selected so that the effect is and that the leaves do not burn, especially in the spring, when they are still tender.
This is how you can make fertilizer yourself out of "nothing." Of course, it will not completely replace the fertile soil in the garden, but it will help your pets to increase the required fruit mass and crown volume.
Have a nice summer and ... more weeds!
