Zinnia - the best varieties and features of growing

Zinnias are perfect for decorating a house in a rustic style, which is gaining popularity in recent years. They are wonderful combined with snapdragon, marigolds and marigolds. No less well these flowers look in tandem with any other plants.

Zinnia - a description of the plant

Florists love zinnias for their beautiful colorful colors and amazing unpretentiousness. These flowers are easy to grow and have long flowering times. Each flower keeps on a plant till 35 days.

Due to their powerful long stems, zinnias are ideal for cutting. They can stand in water for more than a week, maintaining the brightness of the color.

Characteristics of Zinnia:

  • annual vegetation cycle;
  • different flower heights - from 20 to 100 cm, which allows dividing zinnias into tall, medium-sized stunted and dwarf species;
  • the leaves of the flowers are whole, pointed, ovate, covered with short, hard hairs;
  • the stem is grassy, ​​powerful, also pubescent;
  • inflorescences - single apical baskets;
  • different diameter of flowers - from 3 to 15 cm;
  • long peduncles;
  • single-row or tiled arrangement of petals, creating complex lush inflorescences;
  • color of various shades, except for a blue palette;
  • resistance to high temperatures and drought;
  • plants do not tolerate cold, seeds and flower die at -1 ° C.

How and when to sow zinnias

Sowing seedlings is carried out since the end of March. The seed placement depth is 0.5 cm. At soil temperature + 22 ... + 25 ° C, seedlings appear on the 7-10th day, after 3-4 weeks the seedlings dive. Seedlings are planted in open ground at a permanent place in late May and early June, when the threat of frost is over.

Possible direct sowing in open ground in May. It is advisable to soak the seeds before planting. After emergence, the plants are thinned out, leaving a distance of 25-35 cm between them.

Zinnia grows best in sunny areas with deeply cultivated nutritious loose soil. The flowering is plentiful, lasting from July to the very frosts.

Interesting fact. Zinnia became the first flowering plant grown in zero gravity aboard the International Space Station. This happened in January 2016 on a Veggie installation.

Terry inflorescences are baskets, outwardly similar to chrysanthemum inflorescences. Strong stems do not require garter.

Features of growing zinnia

Friendly shoots, unpretentiousness, ease of care, and long flowering, combined with a variety of sizes and shades make zinnia very attractive for both beginners and experienced gardeners. These flowers are widely used for decoration of flower beds, discounts and cuts.

If you want to grow small, but dense bushes, then you can pinch the flowers. This is done when several pairs of true leaves appear on the plants. Nipping is performed on 4-5 sheets.

During periods of severe drought, zinnias need watering. Water must be poured strictly under the root. Fertilize flowers only twice a season - a month after emergence and immediately before flowering. As a fertilizer, you can use the mineral complex.

Of the pests for zinnia, May beetles, aphids, snails and slugs are the most dangerous. The latter two are fought manually; flowers are protected from insects by spraying with insecticides.

Zinnia may well get sick, as a rule, it is exposed to fungal infections or rot. Such diseases are extremely difficult to overcome, so you have to completely remove the affected flowers.
